Marangu Route

  • Day 1.

    Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, and transfer to Outpost/Karama Hotel.

  • Day 2.

    After breakfast, drive to Nare Moru village (6,500 ft), where the trek begins. Walk through cultivated land and pine forest to Simba Campsite, 8,900 ft (4 hours). Overnight camping.

  • Day 3.

    After breakfast, hike from Simba Campsite to Third Cave via Second Cave. Enjoy impressive views of Kibo and the eastern ice fields on the crater rim (4-5 hours). Third Cave Campsite at 11,060 ft. Overnight camping.

  • Day 4.

    After breakfast, leave Third Cave for Kibo Hut (15,000 ft) at the base of the Kibo crater wall (4-5 hours). Spend the remainder of the day resting in preparation for the final ascent.

  • Day 5.

    Start very early for the summit, ascending scree to Gilman’s Point (18,930 ft) on the crater rim, and then proceed to Uhuru Peak (6-7 hours). Descend to Kibo Hut for tea/soup/cookies, then continue down to Horombo Hut, 12,000 ft (5 hours). Overnight at Horombo Hut.

  • Day 6.

    After breakfast, descend from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate (5-6 hours). A waiting car will take you back to Outpost/Karama Hotel.

  • Day 7.

    Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your return flight.

Included:

  • Arrival and departure transfers from Kilimanjaro Airport, or bus shuttle transfer from Nairobi-Arusha-Nairobi if flying to/from Nairobi.

  • 2 nights accommodation at a mid-class hotel in Arusha (Bed & Breakfast) before and after the climb. Upgrades are available: $40 per person for the 2 nights at Outpost Lodge, or $50 per person for the 2 nights at Impala Hotel.

  • Accommodation in mountain huts or mountain tents with mattresses, using high-quality expedition tents from Eureka and The North Face.

  • All park fees, including mountain rescue fees, government taxes, and all applicable fees and taxes.

  • Services of a professional lead guide who is medically trained, certified, licensed, and English-speaking.

  • Services of English-speaking assistant guides, a skilled cook, and an adequate number of porters for your luggage, food, and water, along with a dining tent.

  • Transport from your hotel to the mountain and back to your hotel.

  • Use of radios/phones to enhance your safety.

  • Group size averaging 4-6 climbers, with a maximum of 12.

  • Discounts available for groups of 3 or more booking together.
